Ever since the legislation related to mattress tags has been introduced there have been a special category of jokes which are popularly referred to as the mattress tag jokes. One of the most hilarious mattress tag jokes which were used as a public announcement was a comment ‘remove a tag and go to jail’ which implied that something as trivial as removing a mattress tag could earn an individual a jail sentence. 
The impact of this slogan was such that people till these days are scared of removing mattress tags for the fear of being punished by law. The very image which springs to one’s mind is that of armed policemen breaking into someone’s house and handcuffing the members of the family and questioning them as to why mattress tags were removed.
It was just a matter of time before this issue began to be used publicly to crack jokes on the authority and also as a form of satire to express one’s discontent against the oppression of the government. As a result, this issue was discussed by different people in different contexts to convey the same meaning. While a dance company used it to choreograph a spoof on the crime, a motivational speaker used it for a lecture titled ‘The Importance of letting go of the Unnecessary Things in our Lives’. Eventually a slogan which echoed the sentiments of most of the people in the matter was ‘What Would Happen If I did remove the Mattress Tag?’
