In Muay Thai camp Thailand, it is very important to learn the six different groups of defenses with Muay Thai. These are categorized to ensure that you are able to learn each one separately and later, when you know them well, put them all together. Defense is just as important as offense when you are a fighter.
In the Muay Thai camp and gym you will learn all of these groups of defenses. The first one of course is blocking. This is the most important form of defense as it will be what keeps you from getting caught during a fight. If your blocking is sharp and strong, you will not have to worry about getting knocked out.
Redirection is another important form of defense. This will cause the defender to change the direction of their strike. This in turn will cause the actual target (you) to be missed entirely. This is the best time to catch them unprepared.
Avoidance, always keep yourself moving. When they are going in for a punch of any kind, quickly move that part of your body to get them off balance once again. A series of leg kicks will immediately slow them down.
Evasion consists of moving your body out of the range of a punch or strike. This will cause the defender to move in close in order to counter atatck.
Disruption is being able to have the ability to pre-empt an attack. This includes low angle kicks to the leg or jabs. This should be done whenever the defender tries to come in close.
Anticipation is when the defender catches a strike. This would include something like catching angle kicks to the body. Countering them before they land include a low kick from the defender to the supporting leg when the attacker begins a high angled kick.
